1793  . . . the said Inhabitants-Householders [are] to choose and nominate two fit and discreet persons to serve the office of Town-Warden for such Parish, Township, reputed Township or Place.
1886  The act also provided for two town-wardens. . . . These wardens were a corporation to represent the whole inhabitants of the township or parish, with the right to let or sell property, to sue and be sued.
1909  Chief of these officers were the wardens, or townwardens, as they were sometimes called.
